Introduction to VEVO: Simplifying Visa Verification in Australia
Apr 01, 2025As an employer in Australia there is a responsibility to employ, refer and contract legal workers. One tool available to employers is Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO), a free service available to view your current and future employee visa details and conditions. VEVO can be used when hiring new employees, conducting routine checks or managing your existing workforce.
This is your go-to guide through everything you need to know about VEVO and maintaining a compliant workforce!
Visas in Australia
Any non-Australian citizen who wants to spend time working in Australia is required to get a work visa. The type of visa is dependent on how long they want to stay and typically if the occupation type is listed on a skills shortage list. View the full list of visa’s here.
Purpose of VEVO:
A VEVO check will disclose whether a non-Australian citizen has either no work entitlements, unlimited work entitlements or limited work entitlements, including any working conditions. This includes the visa expiry. With access to this information, employers can validate their workforce and ensure they are employing legal workers. The visa holder must provide their permission for an employer to access this information.
Setting up VEVO:
Organisations need to register for an ImmiAccount to then use VEVO and see the visa conditions of visa holders, who have provided permission. The steps for establishing access to VEVO are the following:
- Have an ABN
- Create an ImmiAccount - click here
- Once the account is created it will go to the Department of Home Affairs for approval and you can set up VEVO access.
The VEVO check:
One the ImmiAccount is complete, you will need to complete the following:
- Get the visa holder’s travel document details and permission
- Get permission from the visa to use their travel document details and make the VEVO check. The travel documents are used to confirm the holder’s identify and nationality. Everyone who travels to Australia must present a valid and approved travel document. Non-Australian citizens also need to have an in-effect visa recorded against it
- VEVO accepts:
- Passport
- ImmiCard
- Convention Travel Document – also known as a Titre de Voyage
- Document for Travel to Australia (DFTTA)
- PLO56 Evidence Card
- Log into VEVO and enter the following details
- Name of the visa holder as per their passport
- Select reference document and enter the visa holders details:
- Name
- Date of birth
- Travel document number
- Submit the information
- Save a copy as a PDF for future reference.
