Portable Long Service Leave: How it Works

australian capital territory employee rights leave and entitlements long service leave northern territory portable long service leave queensland south australia victoria western australia Nov 16, 2023

For most employees, the moment you resign from your job and start a new position with a new employer - your continuous service and subsequent long-service entitlements restart. HOWEVER... this isn't the case for all industries... Let's discuss.

Let's recap: What is long service leave (LSL)?

LSL is an Australian entitlement that allows employees, who have been employed with the same employer for an extended period of service to a period of additional paid leave.

This entitlement varies per State in terms of the length of leave and when access to accrued entitlements is granted to the employee. Click here for a breakdown...

With that being said, portable LSL allows employees to work for different employers within the same industry without breaking their continuous service. This means that their long service leave entitlements will continue to accrue.

Portable LSL takes into account the transient nature of the selected industries, which means that workers will typically work for more than 1 employer.

The industries this applies to per State and Territory:
